Reflections from Glory in the City meetings
October 31st November 2nd 2006
Over the past 3 years we have experienced some awesome times of God’s glory being manifested in the meetings, which have been held in church buildings in the Balham and Clapham area. People who have come to the meetings have been saved, renewed, refreshed and revived and this has created a greater desire for the Presence of God in the churches that have been represented.
In June 2006, following another week of meeting s for the Church to come together to be in God’s Presence, there was a great sense that God was wanting His Church to experience His glory outside of the walls of church buildings, and that His glory might also be experienced by people who had either dropped out of Church or had never been to Church in their lives.
The venue that was chosen was York Gardens Community Centre, a small building on the so-called ‘notorious’ Winstanley Estate. The estate is home to around 1000 families, but has been known for its social needs and deprivation. This seemed the perfect location to take the Glory in the City meetings, because it was to ‘such as these’ that Jesus gave His life for.
In the weeks preceding the meetings, prayer teams walked the estate and prayed prayers of identificational repentance, had communion on the land as a testimony to the cleansing and redemptive work of the cross, and blessed the community with prophetic declarations in preparation for God’s glory coming to the Winstanley Estate. A YWAM DTS team gave time to meet people on the estate and talked to them about Jesus and invited them to the meetings. There was a great sense of anticipation in the days leading to the GITCity meetings.

Finally, the moment came, on the 102nd anniversary of the official start of the Welsh Revival, for the meetings to begin. From the very start of the meetings, there seemed to be a great intensity of the Presence of God in the meetings, and we began to encounter, experience and embrace His glory. In the course of the 3 days, some heard the sound of angels; others smelled the sweet aroma of God’s Presence, while others just enjoyed being in the beauty of His Presence. The teaching throughout the week was inspiring as well as challenging, as many sensed that this was such a significant time for the Church to get ready for His coming. One woman felt that the cry she had cried in one of the meetings, was the cry of people entering eternity without Christ and without hope. The teaching on Holiness and the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord seemed particularly timely.
One 11-year-old child described what he saw in the evening meetings: ‘On the first evening, I saw what looked like liquid coming through a small crack in the ceiling of the building, between the first and second beams. On the second evening, the liquid had risen to peoples’ waists as they worshipped God, but on the last evening, it had begun to seep out through the glass doors and out onto the estate, the streets, the houses, buses and cars’.
Several people have testified that during the week of meetings, God had shown them visions of a large dam that had begun to crack, and the water was about to burst. God has spoken to some in dreams, about the soon coming revival. Others have felt a conviction in their spirits about what to watch on television and what not to watch. Still others have felt God softened their hearts to love the unsaved with His love.
We did not have opportunity to hear from everyone who came to the meetings, and neither can we know the full effect of God’s glory touching the Winstanley Estate. However, we did what we felt God had called us to do…take His glory into our city.
